Hemorrhoids are an absolutely awful condition. The hemorrhoids can cause all sorts of pain and discomfort. It is therefore in your best interests to try and clear up those symptoms as soon as possible so you can get on with your day-to-day life without the fear that things are going to end up getting a whole lot worse.
Now; there are many different medications available on the market for treating hemorrhoids. I am not going to talk about them on this page though. This is because hemorrhoids will, more often than not at least, require absolutely nothing in the way of medical intervention (bar going to your doctor to make sure that you are actually suffering from hemorrhoids and not something a whole lot worse at least). On this page I am going to talk about hemorrhoid home treatment. These methods will make your symptoms a whole lot easier to deal with and may even speed up the amount of time that it takes for your hemorrhoids to clear up. You can also use these methods in combination with medication if you so wish.
Soak Regularly in a Warm Bath or Sitz Bath
This is probably one of the quickest ways in which to relieve the pain of hemorrhoids. Those who regularly take warm baths, or even sitz baths, will notice that they will barely suffer from any of the symptoms of hemorrhoids.
So; what is a sitz bath? Well; it is a bath that you fill up to your waist only. This means that your rectum is going to be covered and thus your pain will be relieved. You can of course also opt for a ‘full bath’ although a sitz bath is obviously preferable for those who do not have a bath in their home. You will want to be sitting in the bath for around 15 minute to thirty minutes.
I must stress that the water should be warm. You do not want it too hot. Water that is too hot will cause problems and could make the inflammation a lot worse. You should also not add any chemicals and the like to the bath (i.e. certain bath salts, bubble bath products etc.) as the chemicals will cause problems with the hemorrhoids by irritating them. All you want is a nice, pure warm bath.
Keep the Anal Area Clean
An anal area which is unclean is going to be a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria will lead to an infection. This will of course cause your hemorrhoids to swell up quite drastically and result in even more pain.
It is important that you clean the anal area completely after you pass a stool. You should not be using dry toilet paper to do this (more on that soon). My recommendation is that you hop into the shower, where possible, in order to completely clean around the anus. Remember; clean hemorrhoids will greatly speed up healing. A clean anus will also mean that there will be a lot less stuff that could possibly irritate the hemorrhoids. In short; it is going to help you feel absolutely fantastic.
Do Not Use Dry Toilet Paper
When you are dealing with hemorrhoids, or just cleaning yourself after passing a stool for that matter, dry toilet paper is one of the worst things that you can use…even if the manufacturer claims that their toilet paper is the ‘softest’ in the world.
Dry toilet paper is going to irritate the hemorrhoids when it rubs against them. It is dry toilet paper which is going to lead to them bleeding. If your hemorrhoids are bleeding then they are going to be a lot tougher to heal. In addition to this; dry toilet paper is not going to completely clear out your anal area. This means that it is still going to be a breeding ground for infection.
As I mentioned previously; if it is possible then you should try and avoid using any sort of toilet paper and instead hop into that shower. If you can’t do that then do soak some toilet paper before you wipe. This will soften it up a lot and make sure that you are not irritating your hemorrhoids whilst at the same time also ensuring that it does not cause you pain. You can also opt for ‘baby wipes’ to clean your anus. I do not suggest normal ‘wet wipes’ because many of them contain alcohol and a few chemicals (i.e. to give them a scent) and these can of course cause a lot of irritation around the anal area.
Cold treatment is an absolutely fantastic way in which to deal with hemorrhoid pain. Most people will find that applying cold to the impacted area will almost instantly eliminate inflammation, tenderness, and the discomfort of suffering from hemorrhoids.
Now; if you have an ice pack then you can apply cold to the area straight away. You will absolutely love the instant relief that it gives you. Obviously you can’t wear an ice pack out and about though (or in the presence of company!). Thankfully there is a solution. Nowadays you can head to your local pharmacy that will most likely have an ice pack designed specifically for those who are suffering from hemorrhoids. All you need to do is activate it, insert it into your anus, and then you should be pretty much good to go. They are not the cheapest products on the market but they are going to result in a great deal of relief for you.
Aloe Vera can be found in many hemorrhoid creams that you can buy from your pharmacy. You can also purchase it directly from your local health store. Aloe Vera will greatly reduce the pain and inflammation related to hemorrhoids. In fact; in many cases it does get to work instantly. You should however be aware that using Aloe Vera is not a long-term solution. It can cause a number of side-effects if used too regularly on the skin. If you just follow the instructions on the ‘packet’ though then you should have absolutely no issues and you can look forward to a great deal of pain relief.
Oral Pain Relievers
Is the pain too unbearable? Well; thankfully there are plenty of oral pain relievers on the market that you can use. Many of them are available ‘over the counter’, but if you find that they are barely touching your pain then you may want to opt to talk to your doctor who will be able to prescribe you something stronger.
Whilst you could in theory use most types of pain medications to deal with your hemorrhoids it is suggested that you use anti-inflammatory pain medication. A good type to use is ibuprofen. This is simply down to the fact that it will not only quell the pain but it will also help to speed up the healing process by reducing the size of the hemorrhoids. The impact may not be huge, but it is almost certainly going to make you feel absolutely fantastic at the end of the day.
There are a lot of different topical treatments for hemorrhoids available on the market. I am not going to go into depth on them simply because they have a huge range. You will want to be on the lookout for products that contain Aloe Vera or Witch Hazel, both of which are absolutely brilliant at quelling the onset of hemorrhoids. It is worth noting that topical treatments should never be used for the treatment of internal hemorrhoids. You should only use them for dealing with external hemorrhoids and you may need to try out a few different types of medication before you find one which suits you. You can use topical treatments in conjunction with any of the other hemorrhoid treatments on this list.
Avoid Sitting or Standing for Long Periods of Time
Finally; it is important that you try and put as little pressure on your anal area as possible. This means absolutely no standing or sitting for long periods of time. This will make your hemorrhoids a whole lot worse. If you can; try and lay down as much as possible. If you are at work and need to sit down then try and stand and have a little bit of a walk around for five minutes every hour or so. It may not seem like much but trust me; it is going to do you a world of good.
As I stated at the start; you should always talk to your doctor about your hemorrhoids before you try any hemorrhoid home treatment. This is in part down to the fact that hemorrhoids can be caused by conditions which are fairly serious and thus you need to make sure that you are dealing with hemorrhoids and not any other condition!
